Aflatoxin-induced genetic mutations could help catch liver cancer early

FierceBiotech - Mar 30, 2017
At 10 weeks, they found a “distinctive pattern of mutations” that could work as a marker for aflatoxin exposure. “What we're doing is creating a fingerprint,” said Essigmann, a professor of of biological engineering and chemistry at MIT, in the statement.

Aflatoxin contamination in food and decontamination methods: Mycotoxins and their control measures

by: Arshad Hussain
In these study samples of dried fruits, nuts, cereals and beans were analyzed for total AFs by high pressure liquid chromatography. Decontamination by different methods was also conducted. Biological and physical methods were evaluated to decontaminate the mycotoxin (aflatoxins) contaminated agricultural commodities, to prevent the threat to human health and the risk of great economic loss. In biological decontamination, some materials such as chemicals, herbal compounds/spices and plants were showed the inhibitory effect on the growth of Aspergillus flavus / Aspergillus parasiticus and total aflatoxins production.

Fungal Metabolites

This handbook compiles authoritative information about fungal metabolites and their chemistry and biotechnology. The first in the reference work series “Phytochemicals”, and written by a team of international expert authors, this book provides reference information ranging from the description of fungal natural products, over their use e.g. as anticancer agents, to microbial synthesis, even spanning to the production of secondary metabolites on industrial scale. On the other hand it also describes global health issues related to aflatoxin production in foods and agriculture, including perspectives for detoxification.

Aflatoxins: Finding Solutions for Improved Food Safety

Aflatoxins are a naturally occurring carcinogenic byproduct of common fungi on grains and other crops, particularly maize and groundnuts. They pose a significant public health risk in many tropical developing countries and are also a barrier to the growth of domestic and international commercial markets for food and feed. In recent years the aflatoxin problem has garnered greatly increased attention from both policy and donor communities around the globe. What can be done to reduce the detrimental impacts of aflatoxins? Because growth of the molds that produce aflatoxins is caused by multiple factors, and because they must be controlled along the entire value chain from production to consumption, only a robust multifaceted approach to controlling aflatoxins is likely to be effective.
